Engaged to be married in July....Congratulations to Gary & Jennifer! We had a great photo session outdoors with this happy couple. Jennifer and Gary love winter activities and wanted very much to have their engagement pictures taken in the snow. Well they got their wish, even though we haven't had a signifcant snow falll in our area this year on Saturday they got their wish. Plenty of snow. During our shoot the happy love birds were visited by some real love birds. It was a magical moment to them to have these chickadees perch in their hands during the shoot. Our recent trip to Carlisle produced some great images of a quaint old town.

We walked around the center of town at dusk. It had snowed a bit the day before we got there but most of it had melted. The lamp posts were decorated for the holidays. we did find one litttle waterfall on the outskirts of town.

I was amazed at how many old buildings were preserved and the history behind their courthouse.

McGee's Mills revisited

I am working on some new post processing techniques with iPad apps. This app is called 100 cameras. Once you upload a picture it gives you 100 different looks. You can also use sliders to control the intensity of each look. I liked this effect and toned it done a tad. This image really pops now. When I took the image the foliage had already peaked and the scene was a little bland. This effect picks up the colors nicely.

Slippery Rock...Rocks!

Just outside of Slippery Rock in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania is McConnell's Mill State Park. A must see and do if you are in the area in any season. We went early to catch to better light and of course we missed the mill tour because they weren't open yet. One of these days I'll get inside the mill. The mill and covered bridge sit quietly in a gorge carved out by glaciers. The road winds through gigantic rocks as you near the mill. A great place to spend the day and take some great pictures.

The ceremony went off without a hitch and nobody passed out from heat exhaustion or dehydration. The weather just didn't let up, the heat was terrible. The bride and groom had problems with the replacement trolly car and it broke down twice more on the way to the reception at the Zem Zem in Erie, PA.. Once everyone arrived at the reception it was party time.

The big day is here. My daughter's wedding. We planned to shoot all the environmental portraits at the Watso Curtze Mansion before the wedding ceremony. The bridal party had problems with the trolly car over heating from the opressive heat and humidity so we had to cancel to mansion shoot. We met the bridal party at church and did bridal party pictures there before the ceremony.

After dinner we went to the Zem Zem, a banquet hall in Erie, PA, for the reception and helped with the decorations. It was a lot of work but everyone worked hard at it and the place looked great.

Friday Rehearsals

Friday evening we went to rehearsal at the All Saints Catolic Church in Waterford. The church was beautiful and had amazing accustics. I used this time to determine my exposures and angles I would use for the wedding ceremony the next day. They practiced the proceedings twice and we were set. Everyone was then invited by the bride and groom to dinner in town at the Sugar and Spice restuarant located in the Eagle Hotel.

The reason we went to Waterford, Pennsylvania was to photograph my daughter Lisa"s marriage to Jeff Englert. We met them in the park at the center of town the day before to take a few pictures and organize our locations for the wedding. The day was hot and very very humid. We shot a few at the park and then walked about Waterford to scout out locations. We found the Jacobson house very nice, but Lisa and Jeff decided The Watson Curtze Mansion in Erie was what they really had in mind. We made arrangements to meet the bridal party at the mansion Saturday at 11:30 am for photos.

Infrared in Black and White

Infrared photography can be a fun way to spice up your B&W photography. When shooting greenery in the summer the foliage takes on a sureal wintery look. To do this I used a camera on a tripod because your exposures will be long. After composing and focusing the scene I add a dark red Hoya IR filter to the lens and expose the picture. Your exposures will vary greatly depending on the light. I usually start in bright sunlight at iso 1600 and us 20 seconds at f-8 then adjust up or down from there as needed.

The Harris shutter effect was invented by Robert Harris while working at Kodak in the '70s. He took three images on a tripod of a scene with moving objects in the scene. He then took the red layer from one and the green layer from another and the blue layer from the last. Adding them together he makes a complete image. Anything in the scene that wasn't moving will come out normal and anything in the scene that moved would show the off setting layers creating a colorful effect. A quite interesting technique and could have some useful applications.

Pre bridals... are they worth it?

Brianna came in for pre bridal portraits before her wedding date. This is a huge advantage for any bride. First it affords her some beautiful portraits without the time constraints of a wedding day. Second most girls change their hair style for the wedding and this gives her the opportunity to view herself in photos prior to the wedding in case this one isn't the right look. Third it lets her wear her wedding dress for a couple hours so if there are any flaws or defects she can get those cleared away before her big day arrives. Forth it gives the bride and her photographer a chance to develop a working relationship so pictures on her wedding day go much smoother. Today I went on to Goat Island at Niagara Falls and shot this 9 image panorama. The pano depicts the Canadian side of the border and includes the Rainbow Bridge and the Face of the American Falls. I stitched together 9 images in Photoshop CS5. The program really is a step up from CS4 because it handled the files expertly and it only took a few tweaks afterwards to complete the image. Light painting is a technique that has been around along time. Dave Black is a Nikon sports professional photographer and a master at this technique. Basically, you are making a very under exposed image and adding small amounts of light during a long exposure time. This lets you experiment and paint light to your photo only where you think it is needed. This affords the maker to be as creative as you want when making the image and is very for fulling as it mixes the technicalities of photography with the creativity of painting. Here is my attempt at a macro scene with this technique.

We took a field trip out of town yesterday to look for signs of spring. We ended up at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens in Lackawanna, New York. A great place to visit and even greater place to have a wedding. The weather inside is always great and the peaceful, relaxing feeling you get is like a mini vacation in the winter season. In fact, one worker inside told me she loved it so much that she would work there for free. I took a few photos as we walked the paths inside each room. Artists and photogs come there every day to paint and shoot the luscious green foliage and beautiful flowers.

Hiring a Professional Wedding Photographer in Niagara Falls

Once again the news wires were cluttered with some unfortunate customers dealing with a non professional photographer and getting burned. I can't stress the issue enough of how important it is to do your homework before hiring any photographer. With the economy at an all time low consumers want to save every cent they can. I don't blame them, I like to get a deal too. Unfortunately, when the economy dips everyone scrambles to find alternate incomes to support their own households. One quick way is to become a quote professional photographer. For a modest investment one can buy a cheap digital camera and viola they are in business. Now they think," how do I make extra income while still maintaining their day job?" The instant remedy for them is wedding photography. That is really bad news for prospective brides. In their efforts to save as much money as they can on their wedding they are very vulnerable to this fly by night photo studio in hopes of getting a deal. You will always get burned dealing with this type of approach. The better way is to do a little research. Make a smart decision. It is really simple too. With a few simple questions and observations you can tell if any photographer is worth his salt as a professional.
Number one ask to see his last wedding. The complete set of proofs that he/she gave to the bride. They can be touched up and ran threw post processing. I am not talking about raw images just the finished set they showed the bride and her mother. The reasoning is, you are only as good as your last photos. It doesn't really matter what they did in the past. It is all about what they are doing now. Now look through this set and look for consistency through out the day. Ask yourself are they too dark or light at different locations through out the day and are they all properly exposed. Can you see the details in the wedding gown? Can you see details in the shadowed areas? Does the color of their skin look natural? If this bride were you, would you be happy with this set of images? You will be able to tell a lot about how experienced this photographer is by seeing this complete set of images. Number two ask if you get all the files with copyrights included in every package. A true professional will cringe and bit his tongue when you ask that question? The reason is a true professional does this for a living. He/ she doesn't have another daytime job and this isn't a hobby for them. They rely on the income of selling you addition orders after the wedding. This is how they stay in business and support their families. Now that doesn't mean a professional won't ever sell the digital files, it just means there will be a little resistance when you ask. If the photographer determines that his re- sales with you will probably be minimal he may offer files at additional prices. And the third and final question to ask is for the bride. Can I see myself working with this person all day? And does he/ she really seem genuinely concerned about doing the best job possible for my wedding. And there you have it. Three easy to follow steps to hiring a wedding photographer. If you are wondering why I didn't mention pricing it's because price is important but a professional photographer isn't ever going to rip you off. He/ she will always give you a fair deal for a fair days work because they want you to have a great experience so you will come back again and again and again for future sittings.
Use a little common sense when your looking for candidates to interview. Like if the guy doesn't show an address on his web site and wants you to email them and they will get back to you. Red light girls! This guy is already preparing to disappear if something should go wrong with your wedding photography. He/ she wants to remain anonymous for a reason. Look to see if they belong to any professional organizations on their sites. Google the studios name and look to see if they have bad reviews or worse yet, no web presence at all.
Use these tips when hiring and I am sure you'll find the best photographer for you.

Beautiful Bokeh

This portrait of my daughter Christina was shot in our living room in front of the Christmas tree. I used a large aperture with an 85mm 1.8 lens to create this great out of focus background. The circles of light created from this technique are called bokeh. This helps give separation and makes Christina the focal point of the portrait. Click to enlarge.

Photoshop Lesson

Todays lesson is a quick non destructive way to dodge and burn to make your image pop. This method will give your images more modeling and add a 3D look to them. Import your image into Photoshop. Click Layers on the top menu tool bar. Click New > layer. In the pop up menu box set the mode to Overlay. Now check the box that says ( fill with overlay-neutral color 50% gray ). Go to your brushes palette and choose a soft brush. Start with a low opacity. Make sure your color tool bar is set to black and white. Now click the layer mask in your layers palette and paint your image. Remember black adds and white subtracts. Start with a low opacity and build your image up to the desired depth. As you can see in the sample images the top is a tad flat. By using this method you can non destructively add modeling to any image.

Today my daughter Christina graduated from NFHS. She received her diploma on stage at the Niagara Falls Cenvention Center. We are so proud of her. She will be starting college at NCCC in the fall. She plans on being a teacher. Today is a great day.

Lighting Lesson 005

It is important that you understand and use light to portray the image you want to express. The before and after image above shows you the original scene and how it was brightly lit. The subject matter gets completely lost in the scene and the image makes no sense.. Now suppose you light the subject and render the surrounding background black. I did this by adding one light ( sb 600 speedlight ) with a Gary Fong power snoot. By under exposing the back ground and just adding some concentrated light to the subject I have now made the sneakers the main focal point of this scene. Now this is in no way super artistic but it is a quick demonstration of how dramatically light can alter your image easily. This gives the scene a different look. Your posibillities are endless in photography. Use the light to express your feelings to the viewer. Camera was a Nikon D3, 24-70mm Nikkor 2.8 AF-s lens. Exposure was ISO 320, f - 16 @ 1/ 1000 sec. SB 600 manual, @ full power.

Congratulations go out to Isaac & Caitlin on their engagement. They are a wonderful young couple. Both attend Purdue University and both are finishing up their masters degrees this year. They plan an October wedding in the Pittsburg area. We will be looking forward to working with them again soon. Spring Waterfall Workshop

We took a ride through three counties and found six waterfalls. We shot five of the six because the Medina waterfalls was too over grown with brush and trees to get a solid view of it. Spring is my favorite season. After a cold gray winter it is so refreshing to get outside. The trees are budding out and the birds are chirping. Easter Sunday we had the extreme pleasure to photograph the Owen's family outside their home. A wonderful family to work with and we got plenty of images for them to choose from. We took a quick trip over the border and went to The Bird Kingdom for some fun pictures. They now have reptiles and tropical birds. Some are in cages and some fly free and that makes it a great place to practice and take fun shots of exotic birds in their own environment. A great place to enjoy.

Pops Concert 2010 " Motown Forever "

Saturday night at Niagara falls High School. The annual Pops concert was held in the gymnasium and was well attended. The kids not only put on a fabulous concert, they also had tables set with flower center pieces and plates of cookies. Tim Horton's provided free coffee and local business donated door prizes. Here are a few images from the evening. My daugther is a senior this year and she is playing the flute right in front.

Every year millions of tourists leave the Niagara area when summer is over. They miss out on a most spectacular site. The ice trees of Goat Island are a marvel to see. 8:00 am today started the season for Niagara's Purple Eagles Basketball. The Eagles enjoyed a ten point lead most of the game over Drexel at the Gallagher Center on the NU campus. Drexel pressed hard at the finish but came up short as the Purple Eagles won 74-69. Today's game was televised on ESPN and Niagara Falls High School Band provided the music. A " WoW! " wedding. We had a great time photographing the wedding day of Jason Strong to April McGaffick. They tied the knot at Zion Lutheran Church in Gasport. Then the reception was held at the Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises. Very nice indeed. Everyone was invited to a cruise on the Erie Canal and after the trip a delicious dinner and dancing afterwards at their banquet facility. We got some wonderful pictures of their wedding day. We didn't have a wedding this weekend so Wendy and I went apple picking. If you haven't tried it you should. we went to Blackman Farms in Cambria. A great place to take the kids. Besides the 10 varieties of apples they also have pears. They have pumpkins, a petting zoo, turkeys, goats, cows, hay bail maze, an many many apple products like cider and apple butter. We had a great time picking 18 lbs. of apples but you can buy them already picked too. Their apple cider is delicious.
